What is
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?
A powerful facilitation methodology that fosters meaningful collaborative dialogue and generates powerful, actionable solutions. Initiated by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen of the LEGO® Group, it is used worldwide in workshops and strategic sessions to explore critical business questions with a systems-thinking perspective — adaptable from two participants to several hundred.
Challenge
A focused question or challenge is presented to the group.
Build
Participants build a LEGO® model to express their ideas — responding by building rather than simply talking.
Share
Each participant shares the story and meaning behind their model. Every voice is heard.
Reflect
The group explores insights, identifies patterns and creates shared understanding.
As it stimulates creative thinking and reveals the real insight laying down at the deep, the method is used in trainings and coaching as well. All you need is a competent, certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator with specially designed LEGO® kits.
Not a game — a serious way to work

Designed for a wide range of purposes, it goes beyond driving impactful outcomes to foster powerful new connections among participants.

Why it works
The wisdom of the hands
Our hands are connected to roughly 70–80% of our brain cells. Building physical models activates more areas of the brain than verbal discussion alone — the hands work like a search engine, surfacing tacit knowledge and hidden insights. Metaphor turns the abstract into something visible, actionable and shared.
Breaking the 80/20 rule
Full engagement of every participant — equal opportunity for every voice to be heard. Structured building and guided reflection unlock the collective knowledge and potential within the organization, turning insight into actionable solutions.
Breaking habitual thinking
Three-dimensional thinking instead of conventional two-dimensional methods. Visual, kinesthetic and auditory senses engage simultaneously, revealing connections between stakeholders, perspectives and systems — and showing that multiple valid solutions can exist for the same challenge.
No judgement, just understanding
Talking over models keeps discussions constructive and focused — never personal. The “no judge, just ask to understand” principle motivates people to express themselves sincerely, while listening with the eyes keeps everyone on track.
Shared ownership
Rather than simply generating ideas, the methodology fosters shared ownership — supporting the successful implementation of innovative strategies across the organization, with stronger alignment and deeper understanding.
Enriched, lasting outputs
Beyond decisions, strategies and solutions, workshops generate tangible assets — three-dimensional models, photographs and visual documentation that provide a lasting reference for communication and implementation.
